On the Run

It’s been quite a while since I’ve gotten to be regular with blogging. I remember thinking at one time that it wasn’t for me. When I took off to live in Spain, I remember getting asked to write about my journey. At first, that didn’t especially appeal to me. Would people really care THAT much about my time overseas? Will I care enough to write about what I do? Will I even have the time or interest?

Fortunately, the answer to all of those questions was YES. I wrote a lot when I was a kid. I wrote series of books while I was in elementary school, mostly concentrated between ages 5 and 14. I’ll never forget the first book I wrote, The Boy Who Wanted a Dog. It was a semi-autobiographical tale of sorts. It was a story about a boy who, yep you guessed it, wanted a dog from his parents. Guess what other five-year-old had the exact same desire. Yep, yours truly! Now, the little protagonist of this stapled-together-on-lined-paper story GOT his dog at the end of the book. The young, hopeful author did not.

But despite that kindergarten heartbreak, it started a trend. I began to write feverishly in the years to come. I based a lot of my books on popular series that I enjoyed reading myself in elementary school, such as books by Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary and those from the Boxcar Children series. I’d write spinoffs using the same characters or write my own books with inspired characters. There was Tommy the Troublemaker, which probably had about a dozen books in the series by the time I was about 10 or 11. I also wrote The Nick Files in sixth grade, inspired by the Encyclopedia Brown series. As I got older into my early teens, I started writing fan fictions. These were stories based on video game characters. I wrote some about the Mario Bros. fictionalized as kids growing up. Yet another was a re-telling of the Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker game. Maybe one of these days, I’ll post a link to some of these online. But hey, let’s get to know each other a little better first! 😉

But I love to write. I really do. And I wish that I had made it a more regular habit over the years. Writing my blog about my adventures of living in Spain reignited that spark. And I’m excited to share what’s on my mind now.

I called the blog Eric on the Run because I feel that’s how I am. I love to travel. I have been able to see so much of the world, and feel like I’m always planning out my next destination. My mind is on the run. I’m a big thinker, my mind continuing to consider the answer to “what’s next”. I’m on the run when I’m local. I keep busy with my volunteer work, my secular work, working out and spending time with my friends. My friends are always asking how I can power through a day, get so much done, and not need to sleep as much. It’s because I’m always on the run.

So if you’ve gotten this far, it seems like you’re pretty willing to come on this journey with me. I may muse about interesting things I’ve read. I may reminisce on places I’ve traveled to. I may flashback with some classic photos of way-back-when. I may talk about what I’m listening to or watching. Who knows?

But let’s find out together.
